It's the fastest way to transform rooms, furniture, lamps, planters, and so much more. While the whole process is quite simple, it's also surprisingly easy to muck up your paint project with a few silly mistakes. How many have you committed in prior paint jobs? Steer clear of these common pitfalls for a more polished and professional outcome the next time around.

Choosing Inferior Applicators

After spending big bucks on paint, you might be inclined to buy cheap brushes and rollers in effort to cut costs. However, in order to get professional results, you'll need to start with good quality tools. Investing in applicators is well worth the extra expense.

Improper Preparation

When it comes to painting, you always want to start with a blank slate. Wash your walls and make sure all repair work is done prior to applying any paint. For paint to go on smoothly, your wall should be clean, dry, and free of any loose debris.

Related: How To Clean EVERYTHING

Skipping the Tape

Attention to detail is what separates good work from great work. Doxidor, Lab And Vegetable Garden Transforms Art And Me - 17 Jun 2015 19:48

"Think about this before you get another dog," I warned my Self.

Katie is not getting any younger either. I have been thinking of painting her since we adopted her 14 years ago. This week, I finally did it! I have always been intrigued by her white on white coloring, and imagined painting her on an antique ivory patterned bedspread which she used to sleep on years ago.

As I finished up painting Kate, Jim returned from the grocery store to say he had stopped at the SPCA and wanted me to go see two pooches he had seen. Reluctantly, I went. When we arrived, one of the dogs he had told me about was out front getting clipped and brushed. Fur and dog mess was everywhere! We went inside quickly. "No way," I thought to my Self.

In the kennel we met the other dog Jim wanted me to see. A shy little dog, 'Honey,' was in a kennel with another dog. She looked like a puppy, small with a cute rounded face. Reading her card, we discovered she was actually two years old ~ full grown! This little pooch was only 24 pounds, a doxidor: a dueschund/labrador mix. She charmed us both. Reluctantly, I agreed as Jim made arrangements to take her home to see if Kate would also approve.

Over the next few days we worked at getting to know each other. On the way home, she squirmed out of my arms and down between the back seats in the van into an afghan which was on the floor. When we got home, she wanted to stay there. At the house I found another afghan and put it down for her. Immediately she made another nest. She is a nester.

Nesting is something I have never been good at. It seems I am always running around doing something. Sit down and be still? Hard for me to imagine me doing that. Got to be DOING something.

The day after she arrived, I took out the vacuum to tidy up. I saw her out of the corner of my eye as I took the vacuum out of the closet. The deck door was open and spying the vacuum, she quickly slipped outside. I went about vacuuming. Jim came in a while later and asked where she was. No where! She had disappeared! We spent the next hour searching the yard, surrounding woods and adjoining neighbors' yards.

Back at the house, 'Sneekers', as we had started calling her for her white paws ~ was curled up in a new nest behind Jim's computer desk. There isn't much space back there between the desk and wall of windows. Just a narrow passageway to get in and a pile of wires!

As each day passed I spent more and more time with her, coaxing her out of her nest, encouraging her to play. Slowing me down, I guess. I didn't feel much like going out to paint, so I set my easel out on the deck and painted a view of my vegetable garden.

The obelisk Jim and I had constructed just last weekend was already filled with cucumber and tomato vines. I sat while I painted, too lazy to stand, I thought to myself. I set up a larger canvas than I normally use en plein air. This one is 203 x 243, not huge but significantly larger than the 9 x 12s I often use.

As I was painting, a neighbor paddled into my painting with his two children. They stopped to catch a bass or two, then paddled away. I quickly brushed them into the picture without thinking whether I really wanted them there or not! The sun moved lower in the sky and finally I felt the need to quit. Most of the garden was now in shadows.

Light and shadows ~ this is what I have been balancing out in my life all week. In the painting of Allie, (Allie's Gift ) everything was darkish, varying shades of dark. In this painting of Kate the inverse is true. I didn't see it until this morning when I wrote down my dream. Dream: I see a low key pattern of darks; darker darks and lighter darks. I am inverting the image. Now it is a pattern of lights ~ high key lights, lighter lights and darker lights. Inversely proportional.

This dream let me see what has been going on all week! Between the paintings and the new dog ~ I have been balancing my life, inverting my perspective on things! In this painting of the garden, I played. I played with the imagery … letting the canoe of children fishing enter into my world without thinking as to whether it would upset my world or not! I let the game I was playing in my vegetable garden onto my canvas of life.

This little dog turned my life right side up! And just when it looked like she might NOT be successful, she amped up the stakes. Toward the end of the week I went to vacuum again. This time she was lying on the floor in my bedroom. So I told her I was going to close the door while I ran the vacuum. When I came back 15 minutes later she was under the bed shaking like a leaf. I let her stay there awhile. Checking on her throughout the morning, I finally coaxed her out. I put her on the afghan in the den and sat there on the floor with her and held her while she trembled.

"I don't know what happened to you," I said out loud to her. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry it happened, whatever it was." I continued. As I spoke I stroked her head. And as I did I felt my Self let go of whatever it was that had kept me doing, doing, doing until I thought I would drop. We let it go together.

Today, on my birthday, I painted these two quick paintings of Sneekers. She was sitting on my sofa ~ a thing I never permitted a dog to do! I had to paint quickly because she changed positions often. The sofa is brick red so I used alizarin crimson to draw her shape quickly, directly onto the canvas. By the time I had the shapes in, she had moved. I responded by gently blocking in the colors the best I could remember.

Then I went and got another canvas. This time she stayed snoozing a little longer. Afraid she might move again, I continued at the fast pace. I liked the gestural quality of the first one, playful. "So what if my couch isn't really pink?" This way I can have a pink couch without having to live with it! Sleeping there on my spot on the sofa she continued teaching me how to play. The blue thing she is sleeping on is a needlepoint pillow I made 35 years ago. I not only let her sleep on it ~ I enjoyed painting it! I am a hard case, I admit. Transforming a workaholic? FAITH … plays a woman! I guess an old dog CAN learn new tricks.

Note: 4 plein air paintings illustrate this article and may be obtained for republication.

By: Dorothy Fagan

Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com

Dorothy Fagan, Artist, Speaker, Author; paints en plein air and writes dreams and interpretations of life and art in her Daily Painting Journal. www.dorothyfagan.com

Fagan earned her B. New Ever Gold painting show stretches the canvas envelope - 17 Jun 2015 01:30

[
]Is painting back — and did it ever truly depart? At Ever Gold's group show, "Some New American Paintings," it encompasses artists as wildly varied as David Bayus, who collides collage and painting, and Carolyn Salas, who makes casts of carved Styrofoam. For a personal take on this group, which includes Austin Lee, Henry Gunderson, Jamian Juliano-Villani, Evan Nesbit, Matthew Palladino and Eric Shaw, look to gallerist Andrew McClintock: "I thought it would be good to take artists who aren't based in this area anymore — David Bayus is the only San Francisco artist — and explore what painting, abstract painting, is and put a little bit of a twist on it." Many of them also now hang together in New York — a cohort stretching the canvas in more ways than one.

— Kimberly Chun

Some New American Paintings: 11 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday and by appointment. [
]Paintings are attached to the human's life right from the beginning. Paintings represent all the items or the themes that we find around us. This is an excellent creativity which everyone are not blessed with. One needs an imaginative mind to think across the daily and usual life around us and the way they depict their view in a canvas or paper.

We can find changes taking place in the paintings. Steve Nash Biography - 16 Jun 2015 06:37

Tags:

[
]Steve Nash played a variety of sports as a youngster in Canada, but ultimately settled on basketball as his sport of choice. He has enjoyed a stellar career in the NBA and has used his fame and money to contribute to many charitable causes.

Steve Nash Growing Up

Nash was born in South Africa in 1974. His father was a professional soccer player, so young Steve, his father and mother spent a lot of time travelling the world. Eventually they settled in Canada, first in Regina, Saskatchewan, and then in Victoria, British Columbia.

Throughout his school years, Nash played a variety of sports including soccer, lacrosse, rugby and, like any good Canadian kid, hockey. In eighth grade Nash discovered basketball and told his mother that he would one day be an NBA star. He attended St. Michaels University School where he averaged nearly a triple-double with 21.3 points, 11.2 assists and 9.1 rebounds and led his team to the British Columbia AAA provincial championship title.

Nash's College Years

Despite his impressive high school record and letters sent by his St. Michael's coach, Nash had trouble getting the attention of college basketball scouts. After receiving many rejection letters from over 30 American universities, he caught the eye of Santa Clara University head coach Dick Davey. In his four years as a Santa Clara Bronco, Nash helped his team win a West Coast Conference (WCC) title three times and was named Conference Player of the Year two years in a row. Nash graduated from Santa Clara with a degree in sociology and was the university's first student-athlete to have his jersey retired.

Nash Joins the NBA

In the first round of the 1996 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, Nash was chosen 15th overall by the Phoenix Suns. Despite his accomplishments as a college player, many were not impressed with the Suns' choice and Nash averaged only 10.5 minutes in his rookie year playing second fiddle to star point guards Kevin Johnson, Sam Cassell and Jason Kidd. His second season saw more playing time and a ranking of 13th in the league for three-point field-goal percentage.

In 1998, Nash was traded to the Dallas Mavericks where he became one of the NBA's best point guards. He gained fame as one of the Mavericks' "Big Three" along with Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley, and became an NBA All-Star for the first time.

Following the 2004-05 season, Nash became a free agent and received a better offer from the Phoenix Suns than Dallas was willing to provide, so he returned to Phoenix where he plays to this day. Nash's stellar shooting percentage, generosity and support of his teammates helped the Suns become a playoff team. For two years in a row, Nash was named the league's MVP. During his time with the Suns, he has recorded career highs in points, rebounds, field goal percentage and free-throw percentage, while achieving league-leading assists per game numbers. Nash has been an NBA All-Star six times in his career.

Nash and Team Canada

Nash experienced a crushing loss as captain of Team Canada in the 2000 Sydney Olympics quarterfinals. Though Team Canada placed 7th that year, his appearance on the team led Nash to stardom in Canada and resulted in being voted 5th for the 2000 Lionel Conacher Award for the Canadian male athlete of the year.

During the qualifying tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics, Nash was named tournament MVP, but Canada finished fourth, which meant they missed out on an Olympic spot.

Personal Life and Charity Work

Nash has two younger siblings, Martin and Joann, who are both active in the soccer world. He has been married to Alejandra Amarilla since 2005 and the couple has twin daughters, Lola and Bella.

A medical condition called spondylolisthesis has made Nash's athletic career even more challenging. The muscle tightness and back pain caused by the condition is the reason that he lies on his back on the sidelines when not on the court.

The Steve Nash Foundation was formed in 2001 to help children affected by poverty, illness, abuse or neglect. The foundation seeks to create opportunity for education, play and empowerment focusing on communities in Phoenix, Arizona, and British Columbia, Canada. Nash also sponsors the Steve Nash Youth Basketball League in British Columbia, which has over 10,000 participants.

For these initiatives, his many other charitable works and his impressive basketball career, Nash was named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2006.

[

When is Chiropractic Care a Scam? What About Reflexology? Magnetic Therapy? | Todd Kashdan - 15 Jun 2015 08:47

Tags:

[
]I was a horrible football player in high school. Terrified of losing my expensive non-disposable contact lenses, I made the unwise decision to remove them before walking onto the field. As you might expect, I was often crushed to the ground without even seeing who hit me. Friends and family in the stands witnessed brutal breaks in my shoulder and torn ligaments in my neck. When my pain tolerance wore thin and I relented to surgery, the next several months were spent with an arm wed to my torso under plaster. When the cast was removed, besides physical therapy, I saw a chiropractor. And it seemed to work. The pain disappeared, my shoulder and neck felt supple, and so I continued going to chiropractors for years.

Impatient to become bigger, stronger, and faster, I never let my body heal on its own terms. When I finally did, I realized that I felt better without my trusty chiropractor.

Why do I share this story? Because when someone is in chronic pain, unable to function, they are susceptible to charismatic people who claim to have the answers. Skepticism disappears. Consumers aren't to blame. This is an age of unprecedented information overload. Who has the time to read the science on whether chiropractic care works? Chiropractic care must be effective. After all, why would health insurance companies pay for visits? I mean, if someone suffers from crippling depression, their insurance only pays for 10-15 visits to a therapist (even though most treatments require at least 3 months to be effective!).

Despite my narrow focus on chiropractic care, I could just as easily be talking about other alternative approaches such as reflexology (the unproven idea that there are connections between the foot and nearly every organ in the body and applying pressure to the right spots on the foot can alleviate ailments and even diseases).

As a clinical psychologist and scientist, I wanted to share three red flags that an intervention is likely to be a scam or sham on the horizon:

1. Jargon. If a practitioner knows that they are doing, they should be able to explain why their services are needed and how they work so that an 11-year old can understand them. Don't ever blame yourself if you are confused by wacky terms, practitioners should be able to describe your problem and their plan in everyday language. If your chiropractor tells you that subluxations of the bones and joints (misalignments) are responsible for an illness or disease, don't be content with this gobbledygook. I kid you not, this is the exact same thing that Daniel D. Palmer, the founder of chiropractic care, wrote about in 1895! Palmer thought that subluxations were the cause of nearly every problem suffered by humankind. Haven't we learned a few things about the human body in the past 115 years? After all, in 1895, scientists had just learned that little microbes called germs can cause disease and perhaps its a good idea if surgeons wash their hands before reaching inside your body cavity.

Moving beyond chiropractors, there are proponents of magnetic therapy who claim that wearing their brand of necklace or bracelet will change the body's magnetic field, aligning or changing electrons, which in turn stimulates healing. Sounds really interesting until you ask how this magnetic field works. How do little trinkets know exactly which electrons and body parts need to be changed and which to leave alone? And how did this magnetic field get out of whack in the first place to lead to health conditions such as headaches, sinus problems, arthritis, insomnia, and cancer and heart disease? All of which are supposedly healed by magnetic therapies (a multi-billion dollar industry)!

2. Evidence. Following the mantra of Carl Sagan, "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." But let's be generous, how about evidence showing that a group of people receiving alternative medicine fare better than people who exercise regularly, sleep well, and eat healthy over a 6-month period?

Gushy testimonials are not enough. What do you think happens after a reflexologist gives you an intense foot massage or a chiropractor stretches the joints and tissues that join vertebrae to one another? You're going to feel real good, much better than when you came in. And you are going to attribute this relief, this feeling of hope, to chiropratic care or reflexology. And in a few days when you return to how poorly you felt before, you are going to schedule another appointment.

On top of this, we often attempt to justify the time, effort, and money devoted to therapy by saying that it's helpful. These reactions are often automatic. That is, we don't deceive ourselves on purpose, it happens outside of conscious awareness. Psychologists call this "cognitive dissonance". Before your first ever visit to a chiropractor, you might be 60% confident that it's going to help. Asked again after spending hundreds of dollars on dozens of visits, you are likely to be 70, 80, even 100% certain that the treatment is working. There are hundreds of studies to document this process. Our knowledge about ourselves is more flawed than we think. This is just one of many reasons why anecdotes do not quality as acceptable evidence that medicine works.

Ask your practitioner for stronger evidence. Ask about published research. Ask for details about the research such as what other possible explanations could exist for why people ended up better after treatment. You want to know if their treatment is better than waiting and letting the body heal on its own. You want to know if their treatment better than exercise. You want to know if their treatment is better than taking pain relievers. You want to know what exactly is going to be changed that is relevant to the problem being treated. And while you're asking questions, carefully observe your therapist. Look for signs of resistance, look for signs that they're comfortable (vs. being pissed off) with your curiosity, and look for signs that they are more interested in your health instead of selling their wares. Any good therapist should welcome an engaged, skeptical consumer walking through their doors…unless they have something to hide or something to be afraid of.

3. Change should be observable and measurable. There should be some clear, objective way to know that the treatment is doing what is supposed to do. I'm not talking about feeling good after being touched in a gentle way on the feet or back. Feeling good doesn't mean a treatment works. Our feelings are affected by the weather, hormones, music, colors, and a thousand other features that have nothing to do with being treated for an ailment.

If a chiropractor says that a subluxation is the cause of your problem, then you should be able to gauge the steady, systematic decline of a subluxation. If you are taking part in magnetic therapy, you should be able to observe changes in your magnetic field and the alignment of electrons and ions. Ask your practitioner how they are going to measure what your magnetic field looks like before treatment and how they are going to notice whether there is improvement. If there is no way to tell that you improved except by what you feel then there is no evidence that their work is responsible for any gains. Can you see it on an X-ray? in a blood test? in a brain scanner? a test of flexibility, stamina, or physical strength? Do other people notice a difference (who don't know you are being treated)? You can never rely solely on anyone's so-called words of expertise. They have plenty of economic incentives to tell you that you are getting better or that you need to be patient and continue what you are doing with them to get better.

Yes, I'm concerned when people offer treatments that lack evidence. I'm concerned when people in pain or who are sick, weak, or desperate for help are preyed upon. When someone invests their limited time and money in a treatment that doesn't work, there is an opportunity cost. That is, they are being pulled away from treatments that can really help them. When this happens, everyone loses.

Here's a simple idea for health care reform, only support treatments that work. When it comes to the spinal manipulations of chiropractors, magnetic therapies, and reflexology, there is little evidence that they are effective in the treatment of any medical condition. And as for lower back pain, headaches, or neck pain, these procedures have yet to be shown to be any better or worse than any other standard intervention that consumers are confident in. This includes massages and exercise. So if you want to get rid of some pork and help prevent problems in the first place, remove chiropractic care from health care plans and support people to exercise regularly….

Dr. Todd B.
